What is the difference between ChatGPT and GPT-4?

ChatGPT is the online interface that allows users to interact with OpenAI’s language models in a conversational manner. GPT-4, on the other hand, is the underlying AI model that powers these interactions. While ChatGPT refers specifically to the web-based chat application, GPT-4 represents the advanced AI capabilities used for generating human-like text.

Although we refer to ChatGPT in our descriptions, the Excel ChatGPT Bulk Prompt Tool actually connects directly to the OpenAI API service, utilizing GPT-4 and GPT-4o models. This distinction is important to understand, but we use “ChatGPT” to make it easier for our users to grasp the tool’s functionality. Our tool leverages the power of GPT-4 through the API to process bulk prompts efficiently and effectively.

Which is better, GPT-4, or GPT-4o?

Our updated Excel tool, has two macro options, one for GPT-4, and the other for GPT-4o. GPT-4o is the most recent model launched by OpenAI and it is much cheaper to use than GPT-4. Our suggestion is you start with GPT-4o, and if you don’t achieve the answers you want, switch to GPT-4, which may be more suitable for more complex tasks. Remember the answers you get are only as good as the prompts, so you should always try different instructions if you are not achieving the output you require.

We have an article on real examples of ChatGPT api costs, which is based on GPT-4o. The cost of GPT-4 is around 5 times more, depending on the input/output of the instructions.

Excel ChatGPT Bulk Prompt Tool

The Excel ChatGPT Bulk Prompt Tool streamlines data processing with AI, connecting directly to OpenAI’s API.

Step-by-Step Setup Guide

  1. Sign Up for an OpenAI API Key
    • Visit OpenAI’s platform to create an account and obtain your API key. This key allows you to access the GPT-4 language model and its capabilities. OpenAI provides free credits for new accounts, which you can use to get started. Remember to monitor your usage to keep costs within your budget. Your API key will start with “sk-“.
  2. Configure the Workbook Settings
    • Open the Excel workbook you received from Corner Milestone and navigate to the “Settings” sheet.
    • Locate the designated cell for the API key and paste your OpenAI API key into it. This step enables the workbook to connect to the OpenAI API and access its features.
  3. Input Your Text and Instructions
    • Switch to the “Main” sheet. You will see three columns with some demo data and formulas:
      • Column A: This is the original text you want to use in your prompt.
      • Column B: Write specific instructions in the format of a formula for each row (e.g., “shorten this text,” “suggest a keyword,” “write a title”). Use Excel formulas to customize the instructions based on the text in Column A. For example, ="Create a single word category for this text: " & A1.
      • Column C: This column will display the AI-generated responses based on your instructions. Ensure it is empty before running the macro.
      • Tip: The Macro will run on any column in a sheet, and insert its answer in the next column to the right, allowing you to run different prompts on the same text.
  4. Test the Responses
    • Before processing the entire dataset, test a few cells to ensure the instructions generate the desired responses. Select the first few cells in Column A and run the ChatGPT macro. Review the output in Column C and adjust the instructions in Column B if necessary. The Macro will run on all selected cells.
  5. Run the Macro on the Entire Dataset
    • Once you are satisfied with the test responses, run the ChatGPT macro on the entire dataset. The macro will process each selected cell with its prompt, inserting the AI-generated response into the column next to it.

Running the Macro

  • ALT + F8: Press these keys together to open the Macro window.
  • Select the appropriate ChatGPT macro for the model you want to use (GPT-4 or GPT-4o).
  • Click “Run” to execute the macro and process your dataset

ChatGPT is not giving me the answers I expect

Sometimes, ChatGPT may not provide the exact answers you’re expecting. Here are some tips to help you fine-tune your prompts and get the desired results:

  1. Test Prompts Online First:
    • Before running bulk prompts with the Excel ChatGPT Bulk Prompt Tool, try your prompts on the online version of ChatGPT. This allows you to experiment with different phrasing and instructions until you achieve the desired results.
  2. Refine Your Instructions:
    • If ChatGPT responses include unnecessary text like “Based on the text you provided…” or “Here is your answer…”, you can refine your instructions to be more specific. Add clear instructions to your prompt, such as “Just give the requested information with no additional text.” This helps ChatGPT understand that you only want the direct answer.
  3. Example Prompts:
    • Instead of: “Can you summarize this text?”
    • Try: “Summarize the text in one sentence. Provide only the summary.”
    • Instead of: “What is the keyword for this content?”
    • Try: “Provide the keyword for this content. Give only the keyword.”

By following these tips, you can ensure that ChatGPT delivers the precise information you need, making your data processing and content creation tasks more efficient and effective.
